So you’ve built your new home, now it’s time to landscape!

After you have built and moved into your brand new home, the next project that most people are going to want to tackle is the landscaping. That’s right, it is time to give both the front garden and the backyard a bit of love so that your home comes to life exactly as you and your family have always dreamt.

To truly complete the street appearance of your home, it’s time to get your hands dirty. Of course, there is no need to do all of the physical work yourself and that’s where Landscapers Plus come into the equation.

As with choosing which home design is most appropriate for your lifestyle, the same goes for the landscaping. It all comes down to a bit of research and deciding exactly what you want. A great place to start is to consider your family’s lifestyle and how you imagine you will use the front and back yard areas of the home.

A few things to consider when it comes to landscaping include:

  • The front pathway. Both the style and location of the pathway are important considerations, along with the types of materials you want to employ. A concrete path direct to the front door will create quite a different effect than a few cleverly placed pavers.
  • Will you have a lot of time to look after the garden? If like most people nowadays, your time is taken up by full time work and trying to keep on top of all your family’s activities then the last thing you will want to be doing on your valuable weekends is the gardening.
  • Also keep in mind any local council guidelines when it comes to your garden, especially around water restrictions. You don’t want to be wasting a precious resource to keep your sunflowers at full bloom. That is why it is often recommended that when deciding on which flowers and trees to include to stick to Australian native plants.
  • When choosing trees make sure that you consider what the mature height of the tree will be? You want to make sure that any tree is planted within a safe distance from your home so as not to cause any future damage. Similarly, make sure you have an idea what size your plants will grow to because that small shrub could eventually grow to 5 metres and end up growing into (and damaging) sewer pipes. Your local nursery can provide you with useful advice and gardening tips.
  • If you have children then you are going to want to make sure that they have an appropriate space to play in. You will want to leave plenty of room for them to run around in or kick the soccer ball. The same applies to pets – if you have a dog then you might want to ensure the family pet has enough space and that there is an appropriate fence around the backyard so they won’t escape.
  • It is also worth keeping in mind that many property developers and local councils have specific guidelines about what you can and can’t do when it comes to landscaping. Make sure that you take the time to speak to them before you get started on the landscaping.

As with other areas of your home there is no need to go all out and spend a lot of money on your landscaping. Sometimes the most effective thing to do to make your new home stand out is to keep it simple, after all, there is nothing wrong with a well-manicured front lawn and a few strategically placed trees.

Whatever you end up doing, just remember that a good landscape design can potentially increase the value of your new home. Therefore make sure that you take your time, do your research and speak to experts.
